"Although the kou apparently had some medicinal qualities, and its bright yellow-orange flowers, available most of the year, were popular as leis, it was the wood that gave this tree its great worth. It was from the wood of this tree that the great majority of traditional Hawaiian wooden bowls were carved.
Kou has a rich, dark brown heartwood with darker streaks and no discernible annual growth rings. Bowls were carved from the heartwood closest to the sapwood, and as an added design element the yellow sapwood was carefully incorporated as decoration against the dark heartwood for dramatic contrast,"
